Methodology, and what this does not tell you
- · Counts are Authorizations to Construct from the eleven annual TCEQ “Types of Systems Installed” reports, 2015–2025, summed across every authorized agent that reported installs for a county.
- · “Aerobic” means surface irrigation plus drip, because both require aerobic pretreatment. TCEQ does not publish an “aerobic” column; this is the closest honest proxy, and it is the definition used on every page here.
- · An authorization is permission to build, not a system in service. Some are never built; none of these figures are a count of systems under contract today.
- · Permits issued directly by a TCEQ regional office are recorded against the region, not the county, so 53 counties show no authorizations at all. That is a reporting artefact, not an absence of septic systems.
- · Licensed provider and technician counts come from the TCEQ OSSF licence register and are the county recorded on the licence — where a provider is based, not every county they work in.
