Aerobic septic alarm guide by brand
Pick your system’s brand and panel to see what the alarm means in the manufacturer’s own words, the one or two things you can safely check, and when to call your maintenance provider. Never open or enter the tank.
BE CAREFUL! Never lean into or enter a septic tank. You could be poisoned or asphyxiated. (University of Arizona Cooperative Extension AZ1160)
Brand not listed? Use “Other / not sure”. We do not write an entry for a brand whose manual we could not retrieve.
High water: the water level in the pump tank reached the alarm probe.
“If the water does not clear the High Water Probe and continues to fill the tank, when water touches the Alarm Probe, the Audible and Visual Alarm will sound.”
TX: “The tank shall be provided with an audible and visible high water alarm. If an electrical alarm is used, the power circuit for the alarm shall be separate from the power circuit for the pump.” (30 TAC §285.34(b)(1)) Why the alarm can still sound when the pump has no power.
TX: “All audible and visible alarms shall have a manual "silence" switch.” (30 TAC §285.34(b)(3)) Silencing the buzzer is expected; the light stays on.
NC: “When inspections indicate the need for system repairs, the Management Entity shall notify the LHD within 48 hours.” (15A NCAC 18E .1304(d)) Provider-side note: an alarm visit that finds a needed repair starts the 48-hour LHD clock.
Hoot — Hoot 5-light Universal controller (2011 to current)
- Audible and visual alarm (buzzer and red alarm light): High water: the water level in the pump tank reached the alarm probe. “If the water does not clear the High Water Probe and continues to fill the tank, when water touches the Alarm Probe, the Audible and Visual Alarm will sound.”
- Alarm with the yellow aeration-problem light: Air pressure from the air pump is outside 28-100 inches of water column (aeration problem). “Pressure must be between 28 and 100 for the system to operate without an alarm/error”
- Stored alarm codes (chirped by the controller in service mode): Code 7 = water over alarm probe; 8 = low air pressure; 9 = high air pressure; 2 = excess water usage (greater than 1 hr in spray). “2=excess water usage (greater than 1 hr in spray) ... 7=water over alarm probe ... 8=low air pressure ... 9=high air pressure” Read in service mode — a provider step.
Hoot — Hoot "Tank Alert" control and alarm (legacy; red beacon on top)
- Red beacon and horn: One of four things: the air compressor's circuit breaker tripped, the compressor switch is off, air-line pressure is low, or the high-water float is up. “The audio/visual alarm activates when the compressor circuit breaker trips, the compressor off/on switch is turned off, or a low airline pressure is sensed. In a high water alarm condition, a normally open float switch activates the alarm.”
Hoot Systems, LA-Hoot Control and Alarm installation instructions
Clearstream — Clearstream N-series aerobic system alarm panel
- Alarm light on and/or buzzing: Either the aerator's breaker has tripped, or the high-level float in the clarifier shows high water. “If the alarm is activated, then either the aerator has thrown its breaker or the high level float inside the clarifier is indicating a high water level condition.”
Norweco (Singulair) — Norweco Service Pro control center (with remote monitoring)
- Green power light off: No power to the panel. “Should always be lit when breaker in household panel is turned on and Service Pro recessed power switch is turned on.”
- Red aerator light (bottom left) on: Aerator problem. “Lit only when aerator has malfunctioned.”
- Red alarm light (middle center) flashing evenly: Aerator over current, or an auxiliary input; stays until serviced. “Aerator over current Auxiliary input | Flash evenly until serviced”
- Red alarm light (middle center) on continuously: Control failure. “Control failure | Illuminate continuous”
- Red AUX 1, AUX 2 or AUX 3 light on: The optional device labeled above that light needs service (for example a pump-tank high-water alarm, if your installer connected one). “Lit only when optional treatment device number one needs service.”

Jet — Jet aerobic plant control panel (1500 Series BAT media plants)
- Red visual alert light and/or buzzer: The control-panel circuit breaker opened to protect the aerator. “If the red visual alert light glows and/or an audible alert buzzer sounds, the circuit breaker has opened to protect the aerator.”
- Warning light after high water: The aerator is sealed and not designed to run under water, so high water also trips the breaker. “If a high water level occurs, the control panel circuit breaker will open, shutting off power to the aerator. The warning light will turn "on".”

Why one brand is missing
Aqua-Aire / Delta (Delta Environmental): No manufacturer homeowner manual retrieved on 2026-10-09; deltaenvironmental.com redirects to adspipe.com/infiltrator with no Delta or Aqua-Aire owner manual found. Add when a manufacturer source is in hand.
Writing a plausible entry from the general shape of these panels would be the one failure worth designing against here: a homeowner acting at night on an instruction no manufacturer gave. “Other / not sure” answers with the steps every retrieved manual agrees on instead.
What “Other / not sure” tells you
Brand not listed, or the panel does not match: silence the buzzer with the silence switch, avoid heavy water use (laundry, long showers) until it is checked, and call your maintenance provider. The light stays on until the cause is fixed.
Silence switch: 30 TAC §285.34(b)(3). Water conservation: Jet owner's manual. 'Call your provider' is the step every manufacturer source above ends with.
Silencing the alarm is expected; fixing it is not the same thing
Texas requires a manual silence switch on every audible and visible alarm (30 TAC §285.34(b)(3)), so quieting the buzzer is a normal step and not tampering. The light stays on until the cause is dealt with, which is the point of having both.
An electrical alarm also has to sit on a power circuit separate from the pump’s (§285.34(b)(1)). That is why the alarm can be sounding while the pump has no power at all — and why “the alarm works, so the pump must be fine” does not follow.
What your provider owes you after the call
In North Carolina, once an operator finds a repair is needed the local health department has to hear within 48 hours (15A NCAC 18E .1304(d)); a like-for-like replacement is reported within 30 days. In Texas the maintenance report goes to the permitting authority and the owner within 14 days of the test (30 TAC §285.7(e)(1)(B)).
Common questions
Why is my aerobic septic alarm going off?
On the panels covered here, the alarm means high water in the tank or a problem with the air pump (aerator) or its breaker. Which light means which differs by panel; the manufacturer manuals linked here say.
Can I turn the alarm off?
You can silence the buzzer. Texas requires a manual silence switch on audible and visible alarms (30 TAC §285.34(b)(3)), but the light stays on until the cause is fixed.
Why does the alarm work when the pump does not?
In Texas, an electrical alarm must be on a power circuit separate from the pump’s (30 TAC §285.34(b)(1)).
Should I reset the breaker?
Only where your manufacturer says so. Jet tells owners to press the panel’s circuit breaker reset button, and to turn the panel switch off and call if the alarm keeps returning. Clearstream tells owners to call the servicing dealer.
